Sunday: Golem rocks @ Schuba's in Lakeview
September 26, 2007 KFAR Jewish Arts Center: Stimulating, promoting and producing the next generation of Jewish expression
Rock out on Succot with GOLEM! Contrary to popular belief, Golem is neither a towering Jewish Frankenstein who defended the Jews of 17th Century Prague, nor a creature from Lord of the Rings. Golem is a 6 piece Eastern European folk band that musically marries the rich immigrant past of the Lower East Side to its hipster present with a combination of over-the-top theatricality and a punk ethic. Balkan rhythms meet melodies found in Kosher bakeries, and lyrics scribbled on the backs of labels peeled off bottles from too many nights in Polish taverns with Gypsy musicians. Golem's JDub REcords debut, FRESH OFF BOAT, is available now. Produced by Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony and the Johnsons, the Battles) and featuring Mike Gordon of Phish, Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls, and Lenny Kaye of Patti Smith's band! "Stellar! A wild edgy approach with a reverance for Old World tradition." New Yorker Magazine "Golem produces the sort of music you'd expect if the shtetl were filled with punks instead of peasants." Washington Post

Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Opportunity
The Hillel Volunteer Committee is making our listserve aware of a wonderful volunteer opportunity - the TOV Literacy Project that is a one-on-one reading program that connects volunteers with elementary school children from a variety of backgrounds who need assistance in developing and enhancing their reading skills. The program runs from October to May, and no experience is necessary - just a desire to help a young student learn to read. There are two options - face-to-face tutoring or working together online with a unique program called Innovations for Learning. Your assistance can open a child's eyes to a whole new world.
The only requirement is that your commit to do this for the entire year, October -May. The face-to-face tutoring is one hour/week; the online tutoring is 30 minutes/week. You set up the day and times that are convenient for you in either setting.
TOV (the Hebrew word meaning "good") is the Volunteer Organization of the Jewish United Fund, and many of Hillel's volunteer programs are coordinated through TOV. Volunteers do not have to be Jewish, and those that are served are not necessarily Jewish. You can check a more detailed description of the tutoring program online at www.juf.org/tov and click on Literacy Project.
Following are the basics:
FACE-TO-FACE TUTORING
All tutoring takes place at the elementary school during regular hours. Tutors help in many ways including working one-on-one with a single student, working with a reading group, working one-on-one with a number of different students or acting as a teacher's assistant. Tutor roles vary by school.
The closest school to Loyola is Gale Academy - 1631 W. Jonquil, Chicago. It is off of Howard a few blocks west of Sheridan Road.
However, there are also suburban schools in Evanston, Skokie, Northbrook as well as other schools in Chicago. These schools are listed on the website.
Every face-to-face tutor is required to come to one training session to fill out paperwork, a background form, etc. An optional session will follow led by a teacher about how to be a successful tutor.
There are two orienation sessions next MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 -
Noon-1 PM at the Jewish Federation Building - 30 S. Wells, Chicago 60606. (At the northwest corner of Wells and Monroe. Take the Red Line to Washington street and walk west several blocks to Wells, turn left and walk 1/2 block.)
6-7 PM - Bernard Weinger Jewish Community Center - 300 Revere Drive, Northbrook 60062. (Take the Edens to Lake Cook Road West, go to the second street - Revere Drive. Turn left. Revere Drive ends at the Weinger JCC.)
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE FACE-TO-FACE TUTORING PROGRAM, AND NEITHER OF THESE ORIENTATION OPTIONS WORK FOR YOU - PLEASE SEE IF ANOTHER TIME CAN BE ARRANGED BY CONTACTING TOV AT
TOV@juf.org or call the TOV Hotline at 312-357-4762
ON-LINE TUTORING
The on-line tutoring program works with 1st grade students at George Manierre School, a Chicago public school. The sessions are about 30 minutes long and occur on the same day and time each week. You pick that day and time. Each student and tutor also receives an alternate tutoring time, in case either one cannot make the regular time. All on-line time slots are scheduled during the regular school day.
Tutoring is conducted via the internet using WebEx, an online meeting software system. You must be able to download and save the software onto a computer. This can be your own computer, or we can download the software onto one of the Hillel computers. "Innovations for Learning," the company coordinating the on-line tutoring, will provide each tutor with a special headset to speak to their students, an online resource with stories to work through with the students, and a manual with a tutoring guide and instructions for games and activities to do with their students online.
All online tutors are required to attend an orientation session to be introduced to WebEx and WebEx AIM Prog, the computer software used for the online tutoring. Each online tutor must attend an orientation session to receive a headset as well as participate in a personalized training call to go through a mock tutoring session, so you are familiar with the system when you begin tutoring on-line. There will be an opportunity in the course of the year to actually meet your student.
There is an Orientation Session this TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2 from 6-7:30 PM at the Jewish Federation Building - 30 S. Wells, Chicago 60606 . (At the corner of Wells and Monroe. Take the Red Line to Washington street and walk west several blocks to Wells, turn left and walk 1/2 block.)
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE ON-LINE TUTORING PROGRAM, AND NEITHER OF THESE ORIENTATION OPTIONS WORK FOR YOU - PLEASE SEE IF ANOTHER TIME CAN BE ARRANGED BY CONTACTING TOV AT
TOV@juf.org or call the TOV Hotline at 312-357-4762
We hope you will take advantage of this outstanding volunteer opportunity.

Hillel Updates and a job opportunity
Tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 25 from 7-8:30 PM at Alana
Kinarsky's apartment, there will be the first session of the two-part
Cafe Hillel. Students will discuss the meaning of homeland in all its
variations. There will be great food for the discussion. Plese email
Amy Galanter at agalant@luc.edu for Alana's address. Also email Amy if
you are coming. There are two aritcles to read that you can pick up on
the counter in HIllel.
The sukkah is up and decorated. Much thanks go to those who helped get
it up and made it look beautiful! The schedule for holiday meals this
week is below. After that is a new job opportunity.
Before we remind you about the Sukkot schedule, we want to give an
explanation of Sukkot. A sukkah is a booth-like structure commemorating
the dwellings the Israelites lived in during their wanderings in the
desert. Coming in the Fall at the time of harvest, the holiday also has
a God-man-nature component. The holiday is called "Sukkot" ( the plural
of the word, booth) and in English is called the Feast of Booths.
Wednesday, September 26 - "SUBS IN THE SUKKAH!" - 6 PM - Hillel Sukkah
- Mundelein South Lawn
This year is the first time Hillel is hosting a Yom Tov dinner on the
first night of sukkot. It will be a delicious, kosher sub sandwich and
popcorn chicken dinner!
Friday, September 28 - "SHABBAT UNDER THE STARS" - 6 PM - Hillel Sukkah
- Mundelein South Lawn
A "more or less" traditional Shabbat dinner - actually it is a soup and
deli sandwich Shabbat! Because the first days of Sukkot run right into
Shabbat, a kosher caterer cannot deliver food just for Shabbat. So - we
are having a kosher deli tray, kugel and great chicken soup! If the
weather is our friend - it should be a great Shabbat under the stars...
Saturday night, September 29 - "HAVDALLAH UNDER THE STARS" - 6 PM -
Hillel Sukkah
Mitzuit Congregation is hosting this evening in the Hillel Sukkah.
6:00 pm - Rabbi Menachem Cohen of Mitzuit Congregation will be a lead
us in a Third Meal Teaching. The Third Meal, Seudat Shlishit, is the
final meal of Shabbat.
7:30 pm - Havdallah, the ceremony that ends Shabbat, will be
followed by the Shiviti Drum Circle, a participatory spiritual drumming
experience.
NEW JOB OPPORTUNITY
Attention entrepreneurs,
This message is regarding a new business opportunity for current Loyola
University students. My name is Yan Pesotskiy and I am a sophomore here
at Loyola. I am starting an organic food distribution company that would
deliver organic fruit to a pick-up location on campus and to students'
dorm rooms. This business project, called Mission Three, was originally
created in a classroom by a group of Georgetown University students.
However, after winning a prestigious international award in Panama
competing against 800 contestants from different countries, the creators
decided to actually launch the business in Georgetown University.
Mission Three team made over $10,000 in revenue in the first 2 weeks of
operation. The start-up was so successful that now they are looking to
expand to other campuses all over the country including Loyola. I am in
charge of expansion to Loyola. Because I am a busy college student I
won't be able to pull this off on my own. I need a partner/partners
with whom I will launch this venture. If you want to learn more details
give me a call, drop an email, or visit our official website at
www.missionthree.com.
Thank you,
Yan Pesotskiy

Yom Kippur/Sukkot and other events
On behalf of Hillel at Loyola, we would like to wish you an easy Yom Kippur fast. We are repeating below the options for Yom Kippur services in the area. Also, we have received 2 adult tickets for services at Anshe Emet Synagogue in Lakeview. Anshe Emet is a conservative synagogue where many 21-35 year-olds attend. The tickets are marked and on Patti Ray's desk in the Hillel office, if anyone would like them.
Please remember that if you are in the campus area - Hillel will be hosting a "lox and bagels" Break-the-Fast on this Saturday night, September 22 - 7:45 PM - in Hillel, Mundelein Center #201.
Information about Yom Kippur services is followed by Hillel's schedule for Sukkot. There are many activities around the holiday of Sukkot, because having a visible sukkah on our campus creates an important opportunity to introduce the holiday to both the Jewish and non-Jewish members of our community.
The sukkah was built Thursday in what is a "Loyola first." The university's Facilities Department helped construct our sukkah. We are very pleased that our sukkah has made it into the ranks of a university project! The sukkah is on the south side of Mundelein Center, right on the Sheridan Road Curve.
The holiday of Sukkot begins Wednesday night, September 26, and next Monday and Tuesday, September 24 and 25 we will be decorating our sukkah. We invite everyone on the listserve to stop by and help hang a decoration! Please bring your friends to join in.
And one, "non-High Holiday" reminder. If any of you are interested in attending the 2-part off-campus "Cafe Hillel" discussions about the meaning of Israel in our lives (this Tuesday, September 25 and Tuesday, October 30 - 7-8:30 PM) - please email Amy Galanter at agalant@luc.edu. A message about this was sent to the listserve last week.

Board Touch Base
I need to touch base with you on several matters:
First - we should all be very proud of Esther, who spoke beautifully yesterday offering greetings on behalf of Hillel at the Turkish Intercultural Club iftar.
Next - just yesterday Alana was asked by David Brinn, the Insrael Intern supervisor, to join him in going to Washington, DC for a protest at the UN on Sunday against the President of Iran. When Alana told me yesterday, I did not realize that it was Ahmadinejad. I did not know he was coming to the US. Let's be clear - this is the "wipe Israel off the face of the earth" guy. This is the "Holocaust is a myth" guy, who sponsored the Holocaust denial conference in Iran last year. This is the guy who sent the sophisticated weaponery to Hezbollah and Iranian military personnel to show them how to use it against Israel in the Lebanon War. This is the " I love nuclear weapons" guy.
We should all be very proud we have a representative going to this protest. I think this is going to be a pretty amazing experience.
Next - as Board Members, you all need to support the Judaica Committee, who has, by far, the most responsibility in these holiday weeks:
Saturday night is the Break the Fast at Hillel at 7:45 PM.
Monday and Tuesday we are decorating the sukkah. Every Board member needs to take time to help do this next week. Today, you should take a minute to look outside Mundelein, since for the very first time ever - the university Facilities staff is putting up our sukkah this morning from 10 AM on. I will be outside "supervising," and it would be good for Hillel Board members to stop by and say thank you.
Finally, about Yom Kippur - tonight I am going to send a reminder email on the listserve about services, the Break the Fast, etc.
I still do not know who can come to Hillel at 7:15 PM to meet any students who want to go to the 8 PM Yom Kippur service at Emanuel on Friday night. Caitlin said she would do this, but she really wants to go to Northwestern, instead. And, I think she should go there. Lindsey, are you going to Emanuel? Carrie, are you going to be coming to Emanuel for Yom Kippur? Can you do this?
Steve and Katie are going to be at Hillel at 6 PM to meet with any students who want to attend services at Mitziut. That is the funky, spirtual, aspects of traditional service that they went to on Rosh HaShanah that meets on Morse Ave. Services there start at 6:30 PM on Friday evening. We have offered to "the Mitziut community" to use our sukkah on days we are not having programs in it. They are going to have a Havdallah in the sukkah on the Saturday night of Sukkot (next Saturday night) followed by a drum circle - to which our students are invited. That will be in next week's listserve.
OK - I wanted to touch base with you on these things.
Take care,
Patti

Cafe Hillel ---NEW---
Hello Hillelians,
So, the new year is well on its way and that brings the idea of reflection to the forefront. Every secular new year we
make resolutions which we painfully try to abide by. For the Jewish new year, we wanted to try something new....
(Drum roll please.....)
CAFE HILLEL!
(are you excited yet)
Come to Alana Kinarsky's house next week (Tuesday, September 25) and lets drink a cup of coffee (and chow down on some great, free Israeli food) while we talk about Israel and its connection to the Jewish people, or the connection the Jewish people have to Israel? This will be a jump off point...
During the second meeting we will continue to talk about this connection by looking at some Israeli song lyrics, hearing some of the music...
So here are a few more details -
There are two meeting times which we would like to you commit to, September 25th and October 30th from 7-8:30 pm both times. We promise there will be warm kosher meals provided and a very comfortable cushion for your tush.
Anything else?
So listen, we hope you will join us, we would love to have you! Email Amy Galanter ASAP if you can come, agalant@luc.edu, so we can figure out who is cool and who isn't. She will give you the address of Alana's apartment. Bring some original thoughts and pick up two short articles to read for the first meeting. The articles are on the counter in Hillel!
Love,
Amy, Konstantin, and Alana

To the Board
Once again we are embarking on another very busy week.
First - a huge Thank You to, first of all, Katie and Steve, for organizing the Rosh HaShanah - almost standing room only - dinner - and to Carrie, who has returned to help her Hillel in times of need - and, in particular, from the Board - Esther, Caitlin, Julia and Lindsey ( I hope I did not leave anyone out...). I heard the dinner was just amazing.
Next - This morning - for those of you who read emails really early - Jennie Lev is going to be at Hillel at 9 AM for the weekly women's Tehillim group to say prayers on behalf of those who are ill. If you can come, that would be great. If you cannot, but have names that you want to add to the list, it is posted on the wall in the kitchen. Guys can add names to the list as well.
Next - Today is mezzuzah stuff - our first Mitzvah of the Month. Tomorrow is our first Latin Jewish movie for Latino Heritage Month. Wednesday is our first Bagel Sale. We are expecting the Board to sign up to work this. We have not decided what organization to give the money to. Any ideas? Please let Esther or Jenny Bekker know. Wednesday night at 6 PM in Simpson is the annual Turkish Intercultural Club's Iftar Night. They annually sponsor a break-the-fast for Ramadan and many organizations are asked to offer words of support for peace, etc. Hillel has been part of this since it began. I am hoping Esther is going to be able to speak on behalf of Hillel. If any of you can be there as well, it would be very good. Thursday, for the first time ever - the university is putting up our sukkah. (Jenny - this is saving Hillel $400!!). We will be decorating it and putting on the greens, etc. on Monday and Tuesday. We wanted it up before Yom Kippur, because we wanted to be able to decorate on Monday.
OK - that is this week. Once Yom Kippur is over, we will be sending out on the listserve an email about our Jewish learning opportunities at Hillel as well as the Cafe Hillel program that Alana and Amy are going to be coordinating this semester. This afternoon, Esther, Alyssa, Inna and Jenny and I will meet to try and find a time for a Board Meeting.
Happy New Year! I will see you soon.

Hillel This Week/Yom Kippur
Shalom,
We hope you had a very good beginning to the New Year 5768!
Hillel has a very diverse set of programs this week. We hope you will find one that you like! At the end of the message is information about Yom Kippur services in the area and our Hillel Break-the-Fast, which will be on Saturday night, September 22 at 7:45 PM in Hillel. There is also a new job listing.
We hope you have a meaningful week between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. These days are known as the 10 Days of Repentence/Reflection. We also hope you have an easy fast on Yom Kippur.

Sweeten your New Year...

KFAR Jewish Arts Center: Stimulating, promoting and producing the next generation of Jewish expression
| | ||||||||
| September 12, 2007 This year, Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat, and so the Shofar will only be sounded at the close of services after sundown. Its absence that day is very noticeable. But what if throughout the year, Jewish music as a whole were similarly silent, prohibited, or limited to its role in fundraising events? We're live in a place and time when the inverse is true- Jewish expression flourishes and even enriches the surrounding culture. It is a renaissance not seen since medieval Spain, too precious to let fall silent for any reason. KFAR depends heavily on your support to bring this renaissance to Chicago. As the New Year approaches, may we all experience the collective joy and celebrate our common heritage through the lively arts. This Rosh Hashanah, sweeten your year. Support Jewish artistry and creativity in Chicago with a donation to KFAR, and help us nourish our community with a calendar filled with programs, concerts and initiatives. |
| |||||||
| Your Rosh Hashanah gift to KFAR helps us bring our signature brand of contemporary Jewish cultural and vibrancy to Chicago that's as sweet as, well, honey. Please make a New Year's tax-deductible contribution to KFAR Jewish Arts Center , and may this year be one of health and joy for you, our community, all the Jewish people and may the whole world be blessed with peace. L'Shanah Tovah! Adam Davis, Director | ||||||||

Hillel 5768
WEDNESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 12 - 5 PM - CARDINAL'S SUITE - ROSH HASHANAH DINNER
A traditional kosher New Year's meal from the matzo ball soup to the noodle kugel to the apple pie. It is totally free. Please join us. Students will be leaving for services after dinner at Emanuel Congregation and Northwestern, for those who would like to go.
THURSDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 13 - 6 PM - MUNDELEIN STUDENT LOUNGE-1ST FLOOR - SHOFAR BLOWING
This is a "Hillel first!" Dr. Israel Sandman, one of the new Theology Department instructors of the Judaism course, is coming to Mundelein Center particularly to blow the traditional shofar notes for Loyola students and faculty and staff. It is a real "mitzvah" to hear the shofar blown on Rosh HaShanah, and it is wonderful to have this opportunity right on campus.
Dr. Sandman will blow the shofar and explain the tradition of shofar blowing. After he blows the shofar, he is walking to the lakefront for the traditional ceremony of "tashlich" - the ceremony of symbolically casting one's sins into the sea as you begin the New Year. He would be glad to have anyone join him in tashlich as well.
NEXT WEEK AT HILLEL

Important Shofar Blowing on Thursday
This is a "Hillel first!" Dr. Israel Sandman, one of the new Theology Department instructors of the Judaism course, is coming to Mundelein Center particularly to blow the traditional shofar notes for Loyola students and faculty and staff. It is a real "mitzvah" to hear the shofar blown on Rosh HaShanah, and it is wonderful to have this opportunity right on campus.

He would be glad to have anyone join him in tashlich as well.
Dr. Sandman is walking here all the way from Rogers Park wheeling his little son to do this mitzvah. Don't worry, I did not ask him to do this. He very much wants to do this on his own. I am writing to ask any of you who will be on campus and can be there - to please be there to hear him blow shofar. As I said in the listserve message, this is a mitzvah. But besides that - this very nice man is walking all the way here to do this for our community - and I would hate to have there be only a very few people there.
Once agian, Happy, Happy New Year! I think we have really had a great beginning to the year!

The Beach Party!
I just wanted to let those of you who weren't able to make it to The Beach Party yesterday know that it was a HUGE success! There were so many new faces and some faces we hadn't seen in a while! From what I saw, not one person didn't enjoy themselves! That said, I want to acknowledge some board members who went above and beyond the call of duty!
Danny Wasserman and Kaitlyn Kozlowsky cooked all the meat and recieved many a burn for their efforts! The food was great, than you very much for your hard work!
Julia Bellow came well before the party and helped set everything up. Your help was much appreciated Julia!
Thank you also to Danny and Scott for setting up the chairs and tables, everything looked very nice!
Lastly, big thank you to Laura Lerer for being the Social butterfly that she is, you really helped make the new members feel comfortable and right at home!
For those of you who don't know, the Apples and Honey Table will be set up in CFSU from 10-2:00 on Monday, so please stop by and help run it! Also, if you have any free time, we could still use some people to deliver the Apples and Honey packets to departments!
Enjoy your weekend and Shabbat Shalom!

NEW ISRAELI FILM "THE BUBBLE" AT LANDMARK THEATER
A taste of Tel-Aviv comes to the Midwest in this story of three young Israelis, two guys and a girl, who share an apartment in Tel Aviv's hippest neighborhood. Trying to put aside political conflicts and focusing on their lives and loves, these progressive 20-somethings are often accused of living in a sort of escapist bubble. But their good times are soon challenged by the harsh reality of the region's ongoing violence.
This film is directed and co-written by Eytan Fox, director of the award-winning Israeli movies "Walk on Water" and " Yossi & Jagger." "The Bubble" has swept awards at numerous recent film festivals. It is being shown at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema, 2828 N Clark St.,(773) 509-4949.
HAPPY, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Birthright Israel Registration Has Opened!!!
"BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL"
The trip is FREE, the experience priceless.
Hillel's Taglit Birthright Israel provides a free ten-day experience for
qualifying applicants. Your adventure. Your birthright.
Want to see the sun rise after scaling Masada? Watch the sun set over the Mediterranean? Drop a note in the Western Wall?
If you are Jewish, 18-26 years old, and have never been on an organized peer program before - let your journey begin now! Shorashim is the organization that conducts all the Chicago community Birthright trips. With Shorashim you experience the awesome adventure of Israel through the eyes and hearts of Israeli peers. Shorashim is the only Birthright Israel program where all groups travel for 10-days with Israelis. Leave the tour bus behind; experience Israel the Israeli way!
To register for the Shorashim Birthright Trip go to the link below. The general e-mail address is www.shorashim.org.
There are going to be at least 3 Taglit Birthright trips in December and January for undergraduates, Russian students who want to go on a trip with other Russian Jewish students, and graduate and young professionals.
YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ACT IS TO MAKE SURE AND PAY YOUR DEPOSIT WHEN YOU REGISTER!
IF YOU WANT TO GO ON BIRTHRIGHT, APPLY AND PAY YOUR DEPOSIT IMMEDIATELY! THIS SECURES YOUR SPACE. IF, FOR ANY REASON, YOUR PLANS CHANGE, YOU HAVE A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD IN WHICH YOUR DEPOSIT CAN BE RETURNED. HOWEVER, YOUR SPACE IS ONLY SECURED WITH A PAID DEPOSIT. MAKE SURE AND DO THIS!
Detail information follows:
The direct link is:
http://www.shorashim.org/birthrightisrael/register.htm.
The application itself should take you about 20 minutes. If you have any
questions about your eligibility, you should contact Shorashim before you fill out the
application.
Below you can find some answers to commonly asked questions.
When will I know if I am accepted?
Applications are reviewed almost every day, so within several days, you
should receive e-mail notification of your "pending" acceptance into
the program. Of course, if you have any questions before then, you can
feel free to contact us at this email or by phone at the number below.
What do you mean by "pending" acceptance?
Acceptance means that you are eligible for a spot based on
availability. You will be notified once we know how many spots are
available and can confirm your space. In order to be considered for a
space you must complete the following steps:
1. You need to submit the confirmation form along with your deposit
and the waiver form.
2. You need to be interviewed.
Where do I get these forms, and how do I pay the deposit?
The forms are available on our web site in the "Forms" section. In
addition to the confirmation and waiver forms, which need to be
submitted right away; you can also download the medical and emergency
contact forms, to be submitted after your space is confirmed. Please
do not send in any deposits or forms until you have registered.
Your deposit can be paid online by credit card at the same location
(click the "Buy Now" button). You can also mail a check or money order
along with the forms to the address on the forms, but it is far more efficient
to do it online.
When will I be interviewed?
If you are going on a Loyola trip, once you have registered, please contact
Patti Ray to be interviewed. Your acceptance cannot be confirmed without an
interview. Patti can be reached by email at pray@luc.edu or by phone at
Hillela at Loyola - 773-508-2193.
I heard that there may not be enough spaces for everyone?
While we hope to accommodate everyone who wants to go, it is true that
the response to recent programs has been overwhelming. It is very
likely that there will be more applicants than spaces available, WHICH IS WHY
SECURING YOUR SPACE WITH A DEPOSIT IS SO IMPORTANT.
We are really looking forward to these programs and promise you an
amazing adventure. If you have any questions at all, feel free to
e-mail or call Shorashim directly.

Help With Apples and Honey Table
I hope you are having a good weekend. First, I want to echo everything Esther said about the "Party on the Porch!" It worked out great! We may have begun a new tradition! It was really quite an amazing Hillel happening!
Tomorrow is our "Apples and Honey Table," and Katie is unable to be there, because of her job. Steve is going to help set up, but then he has to leave for classes. Jennie is beginning her Women's Tehillim Group tomorrow at 9 AM. This will meet on Mondays at 9 AM and is an opportunity to say prayers for those who are ill. Jennie has already begun developing a list of names for whom the prayers will be said. She has special books with the prayers in English as well as Hebrew. There are only several such groups as this in Chicago, though this kind of women's prayer for those in need has become an international phenomena in the Jewish community. This is for anyone to attend.
However, Jennie is also one of the Judaica Chairs - which means she will not be able to be in two places at one time - so she will not be able to help set up the "Apples and Honey Table" in CFSU. Anyone that can be there tomorrow morning at 9:15 AM, just go to the CFSU Lobby. Also, if you have any time throughout the day - please be at the table.
Finally - very few Board people have signed up for the Rosh HaShanah Dinner. If you are able to come on Wednesday evening at 5 PM, please sign up in the Hillel office.
I am literally off to New York for my son's engagement party.
See you tomorrow.

Hillel This Week
Shalom,
First, we would like to welcome those who have joined the Hillel listserve this week - Welcome to Loyola!
This listserve message publicizes our two special programs this week: The Wednesday Israeli "Birthright" Dinner for those who have been to Israel and would like to return, and for those who want to go on Birthright. Wednesday is the first day of Registration for winter trips. We will be sending a special listserve message just about Birthright Registration. There is also information below about Thursday's annual Hillel Beach Party.
After the details about these programs, there are some Hillel notices - some job postings and announcements about a special Israel conference in Nashville for aspiring writers and journalists as well as a great TV Concert from Masada on Thursday night on PBS/WTTW at 8 PM.
We are also going to send a special listserve message later this week about free High Holiday services in the area. Hillel does not conduct services on campus. We will have a Rosh HaShanah Dinner on Wednesday night, September 12 at 5 PM, leaving students time to get to services. We will also have our annual Apples and Honey Tables in the Student Union Lobby this Monday, September 10, where all the information about High Holiday services will be available - in addition to apples, honey and chocolate and caramel fondue!
Wednesday, September 5 - 5 PM - Hillel-Mundelein 2nd Floor - "BACK FROM BIRTHRIGHT - NOW WHAT?" Israeli dinner
With great Israeli food, this is an opportunity for students who were in Israel on Birthright or other programs to meet each other as well as students interested in going on Birthright during Winter Break or next summer. There will be information on
the next Birthright trips as well as opportunities for returning to Israel this winter and next summer for those who have already been to Israel.
Wednesday, September 5 is the first day of registration for the Winter Birthright trips, so it is a perfect time for our Israeli dinner. About 5:30 PM we will have some students who were in Israel this summer share their highlights. Our special guest will be ADAM STEWART, the North American Director of Shorashim, our Birthright provider, (as well as the beloved Judaism teacher at Loyola, who had to leave us because of his Birthright responsibilities). Adam will have the answers to your questions about upcoming Birthright trips as well as programs that let you return to Israel.
Thursday, September 6 - 4-7 PM - Hartigan Beach/Park (where Albion meets the Lake) - HILLEL'S ANNUAL BEACH PARTY!
Hillel holds its annual Beach Party on the beautiful little beach/park right next to campus. We set up a volleyball net on the sand, and this year we are trying something new - a BBQ. We are bringing out the grills and kosher hot dogs, hamburgers, and marinated chicken tenders! We will also have some Hillel giveaways! We are praying that the weather holds out, and we hope you will join us! Albion Avenue is the street just north of Loyola Ave. You can get to the beach by taking the alley behind the Wellness Center.

"DO THE 'WRITE' THING" CONFERENCE FOR WRITERS AND JOURNALISTS
November 11-13, 2007 - Nashville, Tennessee
This is an annual conference sponsored by Hagshama, the organization that helps campuses with Israel information, advocacy and programming. The conference timing and location always coincides with the yearly meeting of the General Assembly of the United Jewish Communities (the "mega" meeting of the year for the American Jewish community).
Here is the information that Hagshama sent us about the conference. Students who have attended "Do the 'Write' Thing" have said it has been an amazing experience. You should note, however, that you will be missing 2 days of classes. Hillel would be able to provide some additional subsidy for this conference.
DO THE "WRITE" THING
"Do the 'Write' Thing" is an incredible opportunity to hone your writing skills, meet and network with journalists form all over the country and abroad, explore issues of Israel and the media, and experience Nashville, Tennessee!
Only $99 covers the cost of the Conference, and flight reminbursements are available.

DAVID BROZA CONCERT FROM MASADA - Thursday, September 6 - 8 PM - Channel 11 - WTTW/PBS
This one-hour PBS television event highlights one of Israel's most famous singer/songwriters, who will be joined by Grammy Award winners Jackson Browne and Shawn Colvin. There is spectacular aeriel footage of Israel. High-definition equipment was flown in from all over the world for this production, and they erected state-of-the art master control studios on top and at the base of Masada. Those who have been there can imagine what that must have been like!
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Area synagogues and temples are looking for teachers for Hebrew and Sunday school classes. They will train their teachers, so you do not need teaching experience. If you are at all interested in this kind of work on Sundays and sometimes during the week, please speak with Patti Ray, Hillel Director, pray@luc.edu.
Tein Li Chow, the Chinese Kosher take-out located in the Jewel on Howard Street, is looking for counter help weekdays from 3-9 PM. Salary is about $8/hour. If interested, contact Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu.
