Shalom,
This week before Spring Break, Hillel has 3 very differently focused
programs relating to Israel:
TODAY - MONDAY, FEBURARY 27 - 5:30 PM - MUNDELEIN CENTER, STUDENT LOUNGE
A reminder that the second session of the "Dialogue on the
Palestinian-Israeli Conflict" will meet. This session will be devoted to
discussing topics relating to the Palestinian and Israeli perspectives of
Mideast Historical Points and the Religious Dimensions of the Conflict.
Students will be presenting these perspectives and then everyone will
break into small groups to discuss the presentations.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 - "MEET THE ISRAELIS" - 6 PM - HILLEL LIVING ROOM
Three young Israelis who have just finished their army service and are
spending the year in Chicago teaching in a Jewish high school will share a
very frank discussion of their persepctives of recent events affecting
Israel - the disengagement from Gaza, the Palestinian elections, the recent
Israeli on Israeli violence in the dismantling of the settlement of Amona,
and the upcoming Israeli elections. These are not policians or official
representatives, by any means, and they would also like to answer any questions
about living in Israel, visiting Israel, being young in Israel.
An Israeli dinner will also be served.
THURSDAY, MARCH 2 - "THE ISRAELI ELECTIONS - WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES AND
WHAT ARE THEIR POSITIONS?"
5:00 PM - Lasagna Dinner at Hillel
5:30 PM - Discussion in the Hayes Room
Ofer Gutin, American Director of Hagshama, the University Student
Division of the World Zionist Organization, is visiting Chicago and will
help us understand the players, the parties and the process of the
upcoming Israeli elecitons and why this is such a critical election in
terms of Mideast peace.
Several Loyola Hillel students hears Ofer speak at the national Young
Zionist Leaders Conference and invited him to Loyola during his Chicago
visit.

Israel events: We got tons!
Tomorrow, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27 - MIDEAST DIALOGUE
Kevin and Alana are each presenting in the "Dialogue on the
Palestinian-Israeli Conflict." The Dialogue begins at 5:30 PM and goes
until 7 PM. It would be great to have Board members there both to
support their presentations and to be part of the conversation. The
Dialogue takes place downstairs on the first floor in the Student Lounge.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 - "MEET THE ISRAELIS"
This year's guys from Kollel Torah MiTzion who finished the army in the
summer and are teaching at the Ida Crown Jewish Academy are going to share
their honest feelings about Israel. I heard them this weekend in
Champaign at the Kedma Shabbaton. This is a program we are not
advertising outside of Hillel. They are very honest about their feelings
about the Israeli government, whom they feel has betrayed Israelis with
their strong positions about the disengagement and the Palestinian
elecions.
6:00 PM in HILLEL. We will have a falafel dinner.
THURSDAY, MARCH 2 - "THE ISRAELI ELECTIONS - WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES AND
WHAT ARE THEIR POSITIONS?"
An opportunity to understand the process, the parties and the players of
the upcoming Israeli elections.
The speaker is Ofer Gutman. He is the national Director of Hagshama. He
is based in New York and is Anna Polishuck's boss. Anna Rozman and Ilya
Zharov heard Ofer at the Young Zionist Leader's Conference in Miami, and
Anna made arrangements with Laura Siegl (Anna Polishuck's replacement in
Chicago) to have him visit Loyola.
5:00 PM - Dinner at Hillel
5:30 PM - Discussion in the Hayes Room
These are three very different Israel programs, all relating to this very
ciritical time in Israel's history.
See you this week.

LOYOLA'S MIDEAST DIALOGUE
Below is the information about our Mideast Dialogue. Please be aware that we
are the only campus in the country that is currently organizing such a
Dialogue, and that says a great deal about the positive environment in which we
live at Loyola. Hillel at Loyola won a national Hillel award in December for
its involvement in the Mideast Dialogue. We think the Dialogue offers a rare
opportunity to Loyola students, and we hope you share this information with
your friends and professors.
"DIALOGUE ON THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI CONFLICT"
WE INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN A DIALOGUE ON THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI
CONFLICT THAT IS BEING COORDINATED BY HILLEL AND THE MUSLIM STUDENTS
ASSOCIATION. THE DIALOGUE WAS HELD LAST SPRING, AND THERE WAS GREAT INTEREST
IN CONTINUING THE DIALOGUE THIS SPRING.
THE DIALOGUE WILL MEET ON FOUR MONDAYS IN THE STUDENT LOUNGE ON THE FIRST
FLOOR OF MUNDELEIN CENTER. THERE WILL BE REFRESHMENTS AT EACH MEETING. THE
FIRST MEETING WILL BE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6 WITH A MIDEASTERN DINNER AT 5 PM AND
THE DIALOGUE BEGINNING AT 5:30 PM. THE NEXT TWO MEETINGS WILL BE MONDAYS
FEBURARY 27 AND MARCH 20 FROM 5:30-7:00 PM. THE LAST MEETING WILL BEGIN WITH A
SPECIAL MIDEASTERN DINNER AT 4:30 PM. ON MONDAY, MAY 1, DURING THE LAST WEEK
OF SCHOOL, THE DIALOGUE WILL SPONSOR AN INFORMAL DROP-IN OF MIDEASTERN STUDY
SNACKS IN THE HAYES ROOM, MUNDELEIN CENTER, 2ND FLOOR, FROM 4-7 PM.
OUR INTENTION IS THAT THIS WILL BE A DIALOGUE AND NOT A DEBATE. THE ISSUES WE
HOPE TO DISCUSS ARE EMOTIONAL, PERSONAL AND CONTROVERSIAL. OUR GOAL IS NOT
ABOUT CONVINCING OTHERS ABOUT A POSITION, BUT ABOUT PROVIDING A SAFE ATMOSPHERE
WHERE NO OPINION IS INCONSEQUENTIAL AND WHERE EVERYTHING MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
NO ONE PARTICIPATING IN THE DIALOGUE IS AN EXPERT. AND OUR GOAL IS NOT
ABOUT MAKING OTHERS BELIEVE WHAT EACH OTHER SAYS IS TRUE, BUT ABOUT
LISTENING TO EACH OTHER AND BEING RESPECTFUL TO EACH OTHERS FEELINGS AND
OPINIONS.
A CORE VALUE OF THIS DIALOGUE IS THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ON ALL SIDES OF THE
REALITY OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND THE RIGHT OF A
PALESTINIAN STATE TO EXIST.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOU JOIN US.
SINCERELY,
ARWA HAMMAD, SUKAINA HUSSAIN, ALISSA MELCZER, SAMAR SARHAN
